DIY: Typographic ceramic pet dishes

8

What you’ll need:

  • Ceramic bowl(s)
  • Vinyl cutter (we used a silhouette machine)
  • Vinyl
  • X-ACTO knife
  • Your favorite typeface (we used Proxima Nova by Mark Simonson)
  • Glaze and kiln (We went to our local pottery painting shop.)
  • Cat or dog

STEP ONE
Using your vinyl cutter, cut out your pet’s name and any other decorative icons. Peel the vinyl and place on the bowl. Make sure you rub it on firmly, removing any excess air bubbles.

STEP TWO
Begin painting inside your stencil. We suggest painting at least three layers of glaze, allowing them to dry completely between each layer.

STEP THREE
Once the glaze is dry, remove the vinyl stencil and clean up any edges with an X-ACTO knife. Your pottery is ready to be covered with a clear glaze and baked. It will take about two weeks to get your dish back from the studio. And when you do, you’ll have the perfect gift for your furry friend.

  1. What kind of glaze did you use? I tried this and it chipped badly when the vinyl was removed. Thanks for sharing ! Great technique !
